Saturday Six #487

I feel like I'm wussing out using two memes in one week.  But I'm a little scattered today.   Last night I was driving home ... and for some weird reason it hit me ... it's Friday night.

Before she died, every other Friday night ... if I wasn't out with Stoney ... my friend would call me and we'd spend about three hours talking on the phone.  We'd gossip ... she'd complain about her work ... I'd complain about mine.  She'd spend an hour or so telling me what latest thing her husband had done to piss her off ... then she'd spend an hour grilling me ... want to know how things were going with me and Stoney.

 Have you kissed?  Cool!
Where'd you go eat?  I like that place.
Did you go to his house this week?  What did you watch on TV?
Did you make him dinner?  No?  Why not!
Did he say he loves you yet?  No?  I bet he does!
Do you love him?  Bullshit ... you do too!

I miss those phone calls.  Even though sometimes she made me uncomfortable with her questions.  I never lied to her ... but I would sometimes answer vaguely with, "Eh, you know ..." or "Eh, maybe ..." and she knew I wasn't going to tell her whatever deep dark secret she was trying to mine that night. I still miss her ... I wish I could call her right now.  I'd even answer whatever stupid, invasive question she wanted to ask.

Saturday Six

1. What do you hear around you right this minute? - Well, first I hear air wooshing out of the central air vent by my bed.  I obviously hear my television ... it's playing HBO's Clear History, if you're curious.  I hear my neighbors hooting ... and  cicadas singing in the trees outside.  Finally, I hear the clacking of the keys on my laptop.

2. Whose laughter do you most enjoy hearing? - I'd have to say Stoney.  It makes me feel good to get him laughing.  Plus sometimes ... like when we were watching Amy Schumer ... he gets laughing so hard that you can't help laughing with him.  It's a small thing ... but it makes me happy.

3. Whose voice do you miss hearing most?
- My best friend.  I miss her so much.  People say it gets easier over time ... but they lie. It doesn't.  It just gets harder.  I've found myself trying to avoid thinking about her ... which I realize sounds awful. But it hurts.

4. If you had to pick a recorded song or tune as your personal theme song, which would you choose?  - Well, my best friend said that back in my wilder years, my theme was, "Don't Stop Me Now" ... which, sadly, I must admit is pretty accurate.  Right now, I'm feeling a little down ... so for the moment, I'm going to go with, "Missing You" by John Waite.

5. How many alarm clocks do you use to wake up on time? - Well, this is actually embarrassing.  I have one alarm clock ... my cell phone ... but on that phone, I have three alarms.  The first is, "Hey, guess what?  It's time to think about waking up."  The second is, "Wow, now might be a good time to be working toward getting out of bed."  The third is, "Are you dressed?  Are you ready to go?  What the fuck are you thinking??  Get moving now!!"  It's not a perfect system ... but it works.

6. Which musical instrument creates what you consider to be the most poignant sound? - Most people who play an instrument can "hear" that instrument clearer than any other sound.  If you're a bass player and you hear a song, you hear the bass line.  If you're a drummer?  You hear the drums.  Me?  I play piano so that's mainly what I hear.  I used to be able to listen to a song and sit down and play the piano part.  I haven't tried to do it in a long time ... I just assume that talent is long gone.

And there's a storm that's raging
Through my frozen heart tonight
I hear your name in certain circles
And it always makes me smile
