Take Me Back Tuesday - MTV

Music Memoirs
Take Me Back Tuesday - Week 19
It's all about MTV!

Who are the first MTV VJ's that you can remember? - I can't remember my cell phone number ... but damn I can tell you the original MTV VJ's. Martha Quinn ... JJ Jackson ... Mark Goodman ... Nina Blackwood ... Alan Hunter ... then came Adam Curry ... Kennedy ... Rikki Rackman ... at some point Downtown Julie Brown joined ... then there was Pauly Shore and Randy of the Redwoods ... does anybody even remember Randy of the Redwoods?! You know, if I could flush out all this useless information and fill my brain with real knowledge, I could cure cancer.

Name 3 tv shows that aired on Mtv. (were any of them actually music related?) - OMIGOD ... great question. Okay, first and foremost ... "Remote Control". What a great memory. Colin Quinn and Adam Sandler in one show? For those of you under thirty, Remote Control was a music-related game show hosted by Ken Ober. Second, has to be "Just Say Julie" staring Julie Brown. A show featuring an 80's redhead obsessed with Bon Jovi ... wonder what drew me to that show. Lastly, I'd say the "Top Ten Coundown" with Adam Curry. Who knew the dude with the great hair would turn out to be a pioneering blogcaster. WTG, Adam ... love your blog.

What bands do you think would be nothing without MTV? - Here's what's sad ... IMHO, most of the bands from the 80's aren't around anymore. I mean, common ... does anyone think Kajagoogoo is going to be inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame anytime soon? Dire Straits obviously got a boost with "I Want My MTV" on hot rotation. I don't know ... when I think of MTV and the 80's ... almost everyone I think runs along the line of Flock of Seagulls, Gary Numan, Berlin, Til Tuesday, or Tears for Fears. For every Phil Collins you had five Men Without Hats.

Bonus:

What is your favorite music video? - Of all time? God, that's hard. I guess I'd pick David Lee Roth's "California Girls." Not because it's the best music video ever made (that's pretty subjective) but because it's a wonderful slice of time and a great memory.

A Salvation Army band played
And the children drank lemonade
And the morning lasted all day,
All day
And through an open window came
Like Sinatra in a younger day,
Pushing the town away

  1. Thanks for playing! I have to agree with you, it's going to be scary now that a lot of 80's bands are going to be up for induction in the RR Hall of Fame!
