I don't usually talk about politics. Not that I don't have an opinion ... perish the thought. I just believe that the current political climate isn't conducive to criticism.
That being said, I have all the respect in the world for the people who are standing up saying, "No! I don't agree with where we're heading." From poetry to valid questions to open letters, local citizens are logging in, standing up, and speaking out.
The cherry on this sundae is the cover article in this week's Illinois Times. It's called "Listen To Me". The article is a collection of stories from veterans who are talking about Iraq ... and why we should leave. It's a frank article and everyone should read it regardless of your political leanings.
Cause in the end, no matter which side you're on ... you need to know every side of the argument.
violence flarin', bullets loadin',
you're old enough to kill but not for votin',
you don't believe in war, what's that gun you're totin',
and even the Jordan river has bodies floatin',
but you tell me over and over and over again my friend,
ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.
Barry McGuire - Eve of Destruction
I love Eve of Destruction. It was one of my favorite songs as a teenager. I think I got it on a 60's greatest hits tape or something like that...
ReplyDeleteI've always loved the song ... then in the 80's they came out with a television mini-series based on Stephen King's "The Stand."
ReplyDeleteIn one poignant scene, Larry Underwood is sitting on a car hood playing his guitar ... and the song he plays is Eve of Destruction.
Great song ... great novel ... pretty crappy mini-series. But for some reason, that visual of him sitting in this world of disease and death and playing that song ... it's stuck with me.
