Mom and I went to lunch today and I saw something I can't explain. It may be nothing. But just in case ... here's what happened.
We were standing at the counter waiting to pay our tab. Apparently there was a large party in the back room ... because the waitress had a handful cash and cards to ring up.
As they rang up different tickets, I watched the waitress put a piece of scotch tape over the magnetic strip on the back of one of the credit cards.
She ran the card through the machine, pushed a few buttons, ripped the scotch tape off, and moved on to the next ticket.
Does anybody know what that's all about? Is there some kind of fraud going on? Is it a trick to force the card go over it's limit? I'm grasping for straws here ... but it just boggles my mind. Anyone have a clue? Because this is kinda bugging me ...

Its a trick that you can use to get a beat up credit card to read without punching in the numbers. I have done it a couple of times myslef when I used to work at restaurants. Some card and/or card readers are just picking.
