Who IS That Guy?

Watching the Today Show has been a tradition in Casa De ThirtyWhat for years. Like everything else in life, the tradition has evolved.

I used to leave for work at 8:15 ... which meant I watched the first 45 minutes or so from the comfort of my bed. But things change ... and so did my work schedule. Nowadays, I leave for work around 7:20 ... which means I only catch a few minutes of Matt and Meredith before running out the door.

But the one thing that hasn't changed over the years is that guy. You know ... that guy. The one who is always in the crowd at Rockefeller Plaza? Rain or shine ... snow or sleet ... he's always there behind the metal railings smiling at the camera.

And it's bugged me ... who is that guy? Aren't they worried that he's some kind of stalker? He's always there! Well ... welcome to the age of Google ...

Allow me to introduce you to Linny Boyette. Everyday for over 12 years, Mister Boyette, 63, has been a part of the Today Show's audience ... except Sundays and the occasional sick day. Born in Jamaica and raised in both New York and London, the well-known fan is a retired United States Army man and speaks in a deep British accent.

He's not a stalker ... on the contrary, he's more like a member of the family. The cast and crew of the Today Show know him very well. In 2001 a collapsed lung landed him in the hospital for 35 days. When he returned to the plaza, he said, the "Today" gang had a special chair and an envelope filled with donation money waiting for him.

To be there each morning, Mr. Boyette begins each day at 3:30 a.m. ... but he doesn't seem to mind. "I can't wait to get here," he said one morning late last week. "It's like therapy for me."

If you'd like to know more about "that guy" ... here's a link to a wonderful article about him at the New York Times.
