Just ... No ...

I've gotten away from posting on Facebook.  I don't do it much anymore.  I check it often ... I like things and comment occasionally.  But it's just lost it's shine.

Let's take tonight for instance.  Someone who used to be a close friend, shared a link about a new foam being used to kill chickens.  It was accompanied by text claiming that free-range chickens were now being killed by foam and consumers were eating this toxic meat.   One of his friends immediately frothed at the mouth and commented about meat eaters being "sick mf'ers" and how we were being fed this toxic foam.

Sigh.

Most of the times, I let these things go.  I just don't see the point in trying to correct people who are so content in their wrongness.  But for whatever reason, tonight I decided to pick up my lance and tilt against this particular windmill.

I wrote and nicely explained that I wasn't trying to claim killing chickens with foam was humane in any way ... however ... this foam was invented several years ago as an emergency option for killing chicken populations during a pandemic.  The whole point of this foam was to eliminate the outbreak while keeping humans as far away from the active infection as possible.  I linked to an article explaining how the foam works and it's use in disease control.  I ended my comment by, once again, saying I wasn't in any way promoting the idea of mass-chicken murder ... but just pointing out that free-range or not-free range, this foam was not being used in consumer products.

Did she respond with a link to an investigative article showing that this foam was present in the food chain?  No ... she wrote back more froth saying, "The article says it's non-toxic ... so that means they're selling the meat.  What do you think they do with the non-infected chickens?  I bet they sell them!"

SIGH.

No.  No, they don't.  You can't sell any part of an infected flock or herd for meat.  That's why it's so devastating when a farm or ranch has an infection.  They can lose thousands if not hundreds of thousands of dollars in stock because, depending on the disease or how severe the outbreak is, their entire operation could be wiped out.

I wrote back ... not that it did any good.   And if she responds with more, "Uh huh!" comments, I'm going to let it go.  If you want to believe that you're eating foamy chicken ... knock yourself out.  Furthermore, if you're out there and you know of an investigative article that says, yes ... in fact, we are eating foamy chicken ... by all means tell me.  I'm not saying it couldn't happen ... that some underhanded chicken-raising bastard wouldn't try ... but I'm saying that the free-range chicken industry isn't going around spraying entire flocks with foam and calling it organic.

I wish every time someone tried to post a link on Facebook, a window would pop up and say, "Have you checked Snopes?"  It would save a lot of time and save me a few headaches ... just saying ...

If you'll be my Dixie chicken
I'll be your Tennessee lamb
And we can walk together

  1. My Facebook philosophy is "Never wrestle with a pig - you get dirty and the pig likes it." Replace pig with chicken if you want. =)

  3. LOL ... a good philosophy! One I should co-opt from you! I guess it's because I worked with agriculture for so many years? I know a lot of hard working families who struggle to make a living farming and ranching ... so when one of these diseases is going around, it's terrifying. No one wants to lose their entire stock because one animal is diagnosed with an illness ... but it happens.

Whatever ... I'm off my soapbox. It just bugged the crap out of me that someone is assuming the worst without a simple Google search.
