Simply Brilliant

Every once in awhile, you see something that literally makes you stop in your tracks and say, "Whoah!" This is one of those things.

It all started when Kathryn Hemple of the Association of Independent Creative Editors had the brilliant idea of sponsoring a contest that would let future movie editors show off their talents. The premise? Take an existing movie and re-edit the trailer into a spoof of a totally different genre. The results? Simply amazing!

Meet Robert Ryang. He's a 25 year old film editor's assistant in Manhattan. He's been working for P.S. 260, a commercial post-production house, since 2002 ... and whatever they're paying him, it's not nearly enough. His entry? Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" re-imagined as a feel-good, coming of age comedy.

In Robert Ryang's "Shining", Jack Nicholson is a struggling playwright who can't seem to find his inner voice, until he meets Wendy and Danny Torrance. This new family opens up his eyes to what his life is missing.

The visuals are amazing ... the cuts perfect. But that's not what does it for me. What makes my jaw drop is the musical selections. The original ominous, sweeping footage Kubrick shot of the car driving up the mountainside is still there ... overlaid with the uplifting sound of Peter Gabriel's "Salisbury Hill." The entire mood of the visuals change ... and it's a work of genius.

I'm not breaking any news here ... this thing is already all over the Internet. The New York Times has picked up on Robert Ryang and word is a major studio has already contacted him. So check out "Shining" when you get a moment ... cause mark my words ... someday this guy's gonna be picking up a statue in primetime.

While you're at it ... check out the runners up. I'm not trying to slight them because, really, their work is damned impressive too! There's the re-cut of Titanic as a horror flick and a redux of West Side Story as a sci-fi thriller reminiscent of 28 Days Later. Amazing work, guys!

It took awhile to get me in
And I'm gonna take my time
Don't fight that good shit in your ear
Now let me blow ya mind
